The Work
The recovery isn't going back.
It's going deeper.
Before the work — breathe
InhaleHoldExhale
Inhale for four · Hold for seven · Exhale for eight
Four counts in. Seven, held. Eight, released. As many rounds as you need — there is no counter here.

Psychoeducation · Normalisation
Acknowledgement
Burnout is not a failure of willpower. It is the nervous system's refusal to keep betraying itself. The exhaustion you carry is not weakness — it is the last honest signal your body knows how to send.
Art therapy prompt
Without thinking, draw the shape of your exhaustion. Not what it looks like — what it weighs. Let your hand move before your mind names it.

II
Interoception · Body-based awareness
Somatic Mapping
Burnout lives in the body before the mind gives it a name. The jaw that holds every unsaid word. The shoulders carrying roles you never agreed to. The chest that tightened so slowly you forgot what breathing without weight felt like.
Art therapy prompt
On a body outline, use colour to mark where the burnout has settled. Red for heat. Blue for numbness. Black for the places you have stopped feeling altogether. There are no wrong answers — only honest ones.

III
Narrative therapy · Identity deconstruction
Identity Excavation
Burnout corrodes identity. You became the role, the title, the function — and when the system that demanded that performance broke you, it felt like you broke. But the version of you that burned out was wearing armour. The question isn't who you were. It's who is underneath.
Art therapy prompt
Create two images side by side: the mask you wore at your most burned out, and the face beneath it. Use any medium. Collage the mask if you need to — pull from magazines, textures, surfaces. Let the face beneath be rougher, less finished. Truer.

IV
Expressive arts · Emotional discharge · Grief work
Expression & Release
There is grief inside burnout that rarely gets named. Grief for the time lost. For the passion that was exploited. For the version of yourself you abandoned to survive. This stage is not analysis. It is permission — to feel what was never safe to feel while you were still inside it.
Art therapy prompt
Write a letter to the version of yourself at your most burned out. Then destroy it — tear it, burn it, submerge it in paint. Create something new from the fragments. The destruction is part of the art.

V
Meaning-making · Signal recovery
Integration
The breakthrough is not a single moment. It is the slow recognition that the signal was always there — beneath the noise, the obligation, the performance. Integration is learning to hear it again. Not as the person you were before, but as the person the fire revealed.
Art therapy prompt
Using any materials, create a map of your signal — the things that make you come alive, that cost you nothing to sustain, that feel like breathing rather than performing. Place yourself at the centre. This is not a vision board. It is an archaeological finding.

Continue by hand
Take it off the screen.
A screen can hold the invitation. The making happens in your hands. Choose an archetype to sit with — print the page and colour it by hand, with no goal but the moving of your own hand.
